John Joseph Nicholson (born April 22, 1937) is an American actor and filmmaker. Nicholson is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of the 20th century, often playing charismatic rebels fighting against the social structure. Nicholson has also written several films, including The Monkees' vehicle Head (1968). He took a break from acting after starring in How Do You Know (2010).

Nicholson is one of three male actors to win three Academy Awards and one of only two actors to be nominated for an Academy Award for acting in films made in every decade from the 1960s to the 2000s (the other is Michael Caine).
